Welcoming Every Child to Learn, Belong, and Thrive

At Dyer Library, we create a warm and inclusive space where children and youth – from toddlers to teens – can explore their interests, express themselves, and grow with confidence. Through stories, play, creativity, and connection, we offer free, age-appropriate programs and resources that nurture curiosity, choice, and a strong sense of belonging.

We believe every child deserves to feel supported and hopeful in their learning and development. In partnership with families, schools, and community organizations, we provide opportunities for young people to build the skills and relationships they need to thrive – now and in the future.

Children and teens benefit from safe, supportive relationships and opportunities to be part of something bigger than themselves. We’re proud to offer these building blocks through a variety of free programs like arts and crafts, skill-building workshops, book clubs, and even local nature hikes. We are so much more than story time (and that’s pretty great, too!)

To help ensure a safe and positive experience for all visitors, we kindly ask that children 8 years old or younger be accompanied by a parent or caregiver age 16 or older at all times, in all areas of the library. Caregivers must remain in visual contact with the child throughout their visit.

Please note: The library does not have a public phone, so we encourage families to make pick-up and meeting arrangements in advance with their children.

Parent-Library Collaboration: Supporting Safe and Successful Visits

We’re always happy to see students after school and throughout the year. The Library is a great place for kids to read, explore, and connect with others. Like any public space, however, the Library is not designed to provide direct supervision for children. Visiting independently can be a great opportunity for kids to grow—but they need to be ready.

We rely on parents and caregivers to decide when a child is prepared to visit on their own and to help set them up for a safe and respectful experience as members of our Library community.

Age Guidelines

Children age 9 and older may visit without an adult if they can contact a caregiver and have a plan for emergencies or unexpected issues. Children under 9 must be accompanied by a responsible caregiver who is at least 16 years old.

Library Use and Expectations

The Library welcomes students who want to read, study, quietly collaborate on projects, attend programs, or respectfully explore the many resources we offer. Our staff are here to help with finding books, answering questions, and connecting kids with services—but we cannot supervise children or act as a substitute for after-school care.

We have observed an increase in disruptive behaviors during after-school hours, particularly among younger children who may not yet be developmentally equipped to make appropriate decisions in an unsupervised setting. As a result, individuals (of any age) who are not actively engaged in Library services and who are unable to follow the Library’s behavior policy will not be permitted to remain inside the Library, in the parking lot, or on Library grounds.

Acceptable after school use of the Library includes:

  • Reading
  • Studying
  • Researching
  • Attending a Library program
  • Playing quietly with games or puzzles

Supervision and Safety

Library staff can assist with books, resources, and programs, but do not monitor individual children or track their whereabouts. It’s important for parents to ensure their child understands Library expectations, knows how to contact you, and has a plan in case they are asked to leave.

Behavior Expectations

We strive to offer a welcoming and respectful space for all—from toddlers to seniors. All visitors are expected to follow Library policies and show courtesy to staff and other patrons. Disruptive behavior may result in being asked to leave. Repeated issues could lead to a suspension of Library access. We recommend having a backup plan in case your child needs to leave early.

FAQs for Parents

We encourage children to bring a phone or know how to contact you. Staff may allow phone use in emergencies, but we are unable to page children or track them down in the building.

Please be familiar with Library hours. If a child remains after closing time, we will try to call a caregiver. If we are unable to reach someone, we will contact the Police Department.

Before their first solo visit, talk with your child about behavior expectations, how to contact you, and how they plan to use their time. Be sure they have a pickup plan, check-in time, and even a snack if they’ll be hungry after school.

Yes. The same rules apply at the Museum. Please remind your child to be especially careful, as many exhibits and artifacts are delicate or irreplaceable.

Working Together

Thank you for partnering with us to make the Library and Museum a safe, welcoming place for everyone. We’re excited to get to know your family and support your child as they grow as a respectful, responsible Library user.

If you have any questions, please contact Library staff. We’re happy to help.
